This is my sixth year at Baty Elementary, and my thirteenth year teaching fourth grade bilingual students. J I was born in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Texas when I was in the third grade. I studied Sociology and Spanish at the University of Texas at Arlington, and I spent some time living in different parts of Mexico after I graduated. I have a passion for other languages and cultures, travelling, teaching and learning. I love reading, watching movies and Netflix, and enjoying time with my family, friends and my dog, Marge.  I love the faculty, staff, students, and community at Baty, and I am honored to be a part of it!

What are some small things that make your day better? When I catch my students being kind, caring, helpful friends to one another.
What is your dream destination for a vacation? Back Pack across Europe.
What brings your joy? My family, friends, and students.
Who is someone you look up to or admire? My Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Ramos
Describe your greatest accomplishment. Teaching 96 kindergarteners how to be respectful, responsible, safe, kind, generous, intelligent, resourceful, patient, resilient, mindful, little human beings.
What is one word that describes you? Passionate

january - fernandez - 3rd

Where were you born? I was born in Houston and graduated from high school in Gregory-Portland, Texas.
Where did you attend high school/college? I have attended college in North Carolina at Coastal Carolina Community College and Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas. I graduated with my bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas A& M University in Corpus Christi.
How long have you been a Baty Bobcat? I have been a Baty Bobcat for 4 years.
What are some small things that make your day better? My day is always better when I get to work and have the chance to work with the other AMAZING Baty educators and students.
What is your dream destination for a vacation? My dream vacation is on a beautiful beach with soft sand, clear water, and ME, relaxing.
What is something most people don’t know about you that would surprise them? I have 3 children of my own. Sara is a Sophomore at Texas A & M University in Kingsville. Gabriel is a Junior in high school, and Sergio is a Freshman in high school. I am happy and proud that they are good students and kind to others.
Who is someone you look up to or admire? I admire Mrs. Rosa Escobar and Mrs. Ruthie Carter. They have been such accepting, loving, patient, and hardworking educators throughout their years of service. They embody the true love for students, our community, and for our Baty Family. I hope to be as loving as these two amazing women.
Describe your greatest accomplishment. I am most proud of being named last year’s Baty Teacher of the Year. I know how hard all of our Baty Educators work and this was a tremendous honor for me.
What is one word that describes you? If I had to describe myself in one word it would be ambitious. I strive to help others meet their goals and try to remain goal- driven myself.

Where were you born? I was born in Clearwater, Florida.
Where did you attend high school/college? I went to Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth, Texas (Go Vikes!). My bachelor’s degree is from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas (Gig ‘em, Aggies!). I graduate with my master’s degree from UTSA this May (Meep Meep!)
How long have you been a Baty Bobcat? 3 years
What are some small things that make your day better? I love when my kids are excited about what they are reading.
What is your dream destination for a vacation? Anywhere with a beach!
What is something most people don’t know about you that would surprise them? I love going to spin class!  I try to spin at least 3-4 times a week.
What brings you joy? My fifth graders!
Who is someone you look up to or admire? I am a fifth generation teacher, so I get a lot of inspiration (and advice) from my family members who are veteran teachers, especially my mom, my aunt and my grandmother.
Describe your greatest accomplishment. TBD! Teacher of the Month is up there.
What is one word that describes you? Optimistic.

Where did you attend high school/college? Pennfield High School, Battle Creek, MI; Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI; Concordia University, River Forest, IL
How long have you been a Baty Bobcat? 2 years
What are some small things that make your day better? Hugs and smiles from my students, helping students understand something new or tricky!
What is your dream destination for a vacation? Italy
What is something most people don’t know about you that would surprise them? I worked at a cereal museum throughout high school and college.
What brings you joy? My students, friends, family, music, and art!
Who is someone you look up to or admire? My mom, she’s the greatest teacher I know!
Describe your greatest accomplishment. Completing my Masters in Education for Educational Leadership and having a career in which I truly LOVE coming to work every single day!
What is one word that describes you? Caring
Anything else to add: I come from a family of teachers and it is my true passion. The students at Baty bring me continuous joy on a daily basis and I feel so fortunate to be a part of their day. I love spending time with my sister and her family, part of which, are my two nephews (that’s who’s in the picture!). I also love to hike and run on the plethora of trails we have here in Austin and also dabble in landscape and portrait photography. Thank you so much and GO BOBCATS!

Where were you born? Las Vegas, Nevada
Where did you attend high school/college? I attended L.D. Bell High School in Bedford, Texas (Go Blue Raiders!). I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (Go UNLV!). I also received a M.Ed. degree in School Counseling from Texas State University (Go Bobcats!).
How long have you been a Baty Bobcat? This is my fourth year at Baty Elementary but twelfth year in the Del Valle Independent School District.
What are some small things that make your day better? Kindness is something that gives me purpose each and every day. Kindness is ALL around and it motivates me to keep going.
What is your dream destination for a vacation? I am intrigued by the Thai culture, cuisine, language, and customs. I would be fortunate to experience it someday (hopefully VERY soon)
What is something most people don’t know about you that would surprise them? I have been a vegetarian for nearly 18 years
What brings you joy? Positive change in the world.
Who is someone you look up to or admire? My mother. She has been through a lot in her life and yet she finds the strength, courage and grace to continue each and every day. She is my biggest supporter and loves me with all of her heart. There isn’t a day that goes by when we are not in communication with each other (regardless of the 800 + miles standing in between us).
Describe your greatest accomplishment. Overcoming difficulties and pursuing higher education.
What is one word that describes you? Hopeful.
Anything else to add: I am grateful for everyone at our campus and in the community who supports mental health and our comprehensive developmental school counseling program at Baty. Mental health disorders are not something to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. Together we can work to provide our community with the resources and support they need to thrive!

September - ms. lewis - math coach

Where were you born? I was born in Beaumont, Texas.
Where did you attend high school/college? I am a proud UT Longhorn.
How long have you been a Baty Bobcat? This is my 5th year, but my heart has been here longer (because I interned for 1st grade).
What are some small things that make your day better? My daughter’s giggle, my dogs’ kisses, and my husband’s cooking.
What is your dream destination for a vacation? Anywhere with a waiter by a pool.
What is something most people don’t know about you that would surprise them? I attended the Oscar’s in 2006, and I was competitive powerlifter in high school.
What brings you joy? Choosing it.
Who is someone you look up to or admire? My Mom. She’s super. She accomplished things, as a single mom, that I can’t even imagine.
Describe your greatest accomplishment. She wear pigtails most days, has a wicked sense of humor, is already pretending to be a teacher like her Mommy & Nana, her name is Briar Gold.

What is your dream destination for a vacation? Iceland! I’d like to swim in the hot springs and hike through the mountains.
What is something most people don’t know about you that would surprise them? I’ve been skydiving!
What brings you joy? My dogs Max and Hunter!
Who is someone you look up to or admire? My parents. They are the most caring and supportive people in my life!
Describe your greatest accomplishment. Graduating college again but with my masters!
